Geek Ink Thinks: Only the good die young

I’m a huge fan of Genndy Tartakovsky, the man responsible for awesome cartoons such as Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack. The last show he was involved in for Cartoon Network was called Sym-bionic Titan, which was cancelled at the peak of it’s popularity. Why? It didn’t have enough potential for a toy line. That’s right folks, the corporate monkeys couldn’t milk it with merchandising, so despite how great it was (and it was great), they canned it!

For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s the story of an alien princess, Ilana, who escapes to earth with her bodyguard, Lance, and a mysterious robot named Octus. Both Ilana and Lance have powered suits that can combine with Octus to form a giant robot named Titan. They would use Titan to fight against the viscious Mutradi beasts that were sent to Earth to kill Ilana. In between disposing of deadly alien monsters, they spent their time at school and living like ordinary human teenagers.

This show had everything! Obscure references to 80’s anime and movies! Giant robots! An amazing soundtrack!

But it seems like we will never find out how it ends. Rest in peace Titan, you were great while you lasted…

  1. Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t heard of Sym-bionic Titans. I absolutely loved Samurai Jack and Dexters Lab. Haha it brings back the good old days when the only thing I worried about on the weekends was getting up early enough to catch some of these shows 🙂

    1. I didn’t hear about it either until after it was cancelled! It’s such a pity coz it was really getting good…

      1. Oh man, I’m guessing it didn’t have much of a proper ending then? That’s really dumb that they cancelled it because of a lack of potential for a toy line…

      2. It could have been the end of the first season, since it was a pretty climactic episode. But there were definitely a lot of unanswered questions which could have only be dealt with in another season.

      3. Oh alright. Better than just cutting off mid-season. That would have been the worst 😦 But yea, they need to have more quality shows like that!!
