Despite being poor, I’ve had a growing interest in fashion. Specifically, geek fashion. As a young lad, a black shirt and jeans was more than enough for me, but I’ve come to realise that what you wear is actually quite important. Not in a “oh this label/brand defines who I am” but “what can I tell about this person by the way they dress” (no doubt most people think I am homeless). While this shouldn’t be the only way you determine a person’s character, I’ve been discovering that it’s actually a pretty cool way to let people know what you are into.
I currently have the following two geeky fashion items:
- Sexy Red Bazinga T from Big Bang Theory
- A Core Drill, from Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann, attached to a silver chain I own
Recently though, I’ve come across this specific problem: how does a guy dress geek without being mistaken for a hipster? I’ve been looking, and hipsters just seem to be stealing from geeky fashion left, right and center. Hell, even if I google “Geek fashion”, most of the pictures I get are of hipsters.
I wouldn’t have a problem with this if hipsters were actually part of a movement that meant something, like hippies and free love, or car guards and spare change. All the hipster movement/subculture really seems to be about is adopting certain aspects of other subcultures, and being into alternative/independent media. I might be mistaken by this, since I have never spoken to anyone who has verbally identified themselves as a hipster, so I can only make logical conclusions based upon rumors and hearsay.
So over the next few months I’ll be exploring Cape Town’s fashion scene, looking for stores that stock geeky fashion items that haven’t yet been stolen by the hipster movement. I will also be exploring the internet to see which stores have cool gear, and actually ship to South Africa at decent rates.
