The news, like many things in life, is mostly complete utter bullshit.
And I don’t mean bullshit as in it’s useless (ok, a lot of it is useless), but bullshit as in “Great, you’ve told me this important thing, but how much of an impact does it have on me directly?” Or bullshit as in “Great, you’ve told me this important thing, but how much can I actually do to stop or change it?”
Now I’m not saying we should all turn into apathetic bastards, but at the end of the day, a lot of the news that we consume is about things that are completely irrelevant to our day-to-day lives, or about things we as individuals cannot influence. This is why I choose to get the news via proxy. Instead of going directly to news websites to get it and wasting my own time, I believe if it’s really important, chances are it’ll affect enough people that I will hear about it by this old fashioned thing called word of mouth.
So now that you know what I think about the news industry in general, make sure to check out an HBO news show called Last Week Tonight – with John Oliver.
John Oliver may be familiar to those of you who watch the (frequently, but not always) brilliant show Community, but he’s not exactly a household name in the US. After this show, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does become a household name for two reasons:
- People realise that he’s actually fucking hilarious
- He probably said something about someone and now a whole lot of people are very pissed off
Last Week Tonight is a brilliant satirical news show that looks at the major events (mostly in America) from the past week, and I really, really recommend you get your hands on it. It encourages critical thinking while at the same time being really funny. The complete show airs on HBO, but you can get quite a bit of free content on the official Youtube channel. Even if you just watch the clips that are available online, I can promise you, you won’t be wasting your time.
