Geek Ink moves into 2015

So I had originally planned to start posting again last week, but a lot has happened since then. Not to me personally, just in general.

Ok, let’s get the personal stuff out of the way first. My week home, as nice as it always is to be back home, wasn’t a completely relaxing break. There are various issues there (some of which just won’t die) and as a result it’s more about coming home to help out than coming home to unwind. And I’m not even the one who shoulders most of the crap. I just have to help deal with it once in a while. So yes, that’s basically my less than amazing week back home.

On the other hand, my week in Cape Town was very relaxing and I spent most of it reading, playing video games, writing, and sleeping in. It was great!

I also started work again last week and it was like I never even went on holiday. Deadlines were looming and I had to work some overtime to get a project done. This was a bit annoying because I was told that I can go back to your old schedule (where I work less hours for less pay), and then get told that a project has to be done before a certain day (how convenient that you are now paying me less and asking me to work overtime).

I’m really not a big fan of the work I do (it’s literally the most boring work I’ve ever done and as a result it’s incredibly frustrating to do). I’ve considered jumping ship numerous times in the hope I can get some actual writing done, but usually at some point my family convinces me otherwise. There’s also the fact that I like to eat good food, and can’t imagine my life with slow internet access. Unfortunately I need decent amount of money to get both of these things. I still have a deal with my parents where I might be able to strike out on my own for a bit, but then I wonder “What’s life like without sushi?” First world problems, I know, but it’s the little (usually tasty) things that keep me from getting totally depressed in this crazy mixed-up existence that is otherwise known as life.

Part of my plan to get myself out of my current job is to try and get some personal projects done in my own time. These include a radio play competition (R50 000/$5000 first prize), a couple of website ideas (these could earn me money, but I need to set the sites up completely from scratch, which is something I have to teach myself), and write some short back stories for a friend’s characters (I have done a tiny bit of work on these, but I really need to knuckle down and get them done). There’s also the Jameson First Shot competition later in the year which I will also need to write something for, but it’s not the most pressing project.

Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, especially since life has generally been… well, kind of shitty. I’ve just been feeling the frustration that comes with being a smarter than average adult who’s really beginning to realise that (for the most part) he’s fairly powerless when it comes to fixing certain problems. Like, terrorists killing cartoonists over some drawings because a book that’s hundreds of years old said they must, or the fact that the country I live in is run by a bunch of greedy idiots who are quite happy to line their own pockets, even if it makes things worse for the majority of the population, or the fact that I actively avoid going to the shops at night because there are some homeless people who know me and I feel shit every time I have to tell them “Sorry, I can’t help you this time”. And it’s not like I couldn’t fix these problems if I had the opportunity, it’s just that I’m not a position of influence where I can tell people “Hey listen you bunch of idiots who have access to money and other resources, go out and do what you’re supposed to do, which is be nice and help others and educate people so they don’t go around trying to fuck things up for the rest of us.”

Seriously, life sucks (not mine, mine is mediocre at worst).

And with that little rant out of the way, where to from here with Geek Ink? Well for a start I am going to try my hardest to keep up with my regular posts. I’ll be sticking mostly to reviews and events coverage as I have been doing recently.

I am still trying to get my Youtube stuff going again but every time I try to record new content something almost always goes wrong with my recording. For example, I bought myself an awesome Nausicaa hardcover manga boxset and did a short unboxing video. I set everything up, did a test shoot, and great, everything’s working. I record the video, check it afterwards, and for absolutely no reason, there’s no audio. This is not the first time this has happened, so I’ve got to try figure out why this keeps on happening.

And that’s pretty much it for now. Hopefully work won’t completely destroy my creative energy and I’ll be able to get a review out by Friday. But if work/life does get the better of me, you’ll definitely have something to kill some time with by Monday next week.
