Geek Ink Thinks: Stop giving away the whole movie in the trailer!

Seriously. Stop it. No buts, just stop.

I finished watching the new Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Justice trailer, and the first thought in my head was “Oh, okay. Now I don’t have to watch the movie, because you’ve just given away the entire plot.”

Off the top of my head movie trailers that have given away the entire plot or key points of the plot include Terminator 2, Terminator: Salvation, Terminator: Genesys (so many Terminator movies), Avatar, Castaway, Oblivion… Why do movie studios do this? Supposedly it’s because most people want to know exactly what they’re getting, but even though most people don’t want this, they will still go watch the movie anyway.

A trailer is supposed to give you enough information so that you feel engaged and enticed into seeing the movie, not so you don’t have to watch it!

Here’s a list of some really awesome trailers that don’t give away the entire movie but still have you excited to watch the movie (assuming the movie is your cup of tea):

Deadpool (NSFW)

Mad Max: Fury Road

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (This was actually better than the movie)

The Martian

  1. The latest “Dawn of Justice” trailer does reveal a bit too much. They never showed Aquaman though & it looks like they nailed the “Bruce Wayne meets Clark Kent” moment.
