Geek Ink Updates: Life and stuff

Hey folks, so here’s a quick update on what’s been going on in the last few weeks.

Firstly, I got accepted into UCT! Hooray, I guess. I will be doing a post-graduate diploma in Educational Technology. Basically, this course looks at how people use technology to teach and learn. Considering I’ve been a technical writer for the past 7 years (even if most of that was on a part-time basis), it makes sense to develop the set of skills I have in that field further. This will allow me to start asking for a bigger pay cheque (especially with the South African economy going to shit), as well as being a good back-up plan in case I decide to make the leap to “greener” pastures. I have completed one assignment, and am busy working on my second one (an e-mail interview with an educational innovator) which needs to be done by the end of this weekend.

Tying into the events above, I have registration tomorrow and have taken the day off to figure out what’s where at UCT. I still have no idea exactly what I need to take tomorrow, but I will hopefully hear back from the admin team so that I have most of my paperwork together when I arrive on campus. Getting most of my paperwork in just for the application was fairly painless, so I’m hoping tomorrow is not too much of a pain in the buttocks.

I will then be busy for the whole of next week with class, which is pretty much the whole day every day, Monday to Saturday. Not sure if it will be fun, but it will definitely be interesting.

Media wise, I have mostly been gaming and watching anime, but I do have a bit of movie news I’ll get into.

League of Legends has had a number of huge updates this year, and of course there’s been the yearly ranked reset. The competitive monster in me cannot resist and has been slowly grinding my way up from Bronze. Once I hit Gold again, I’m sure my interest will wane a bit, as it always has.

In terms of anime, I am hooked on Haikyuu season 2, and have been dabbling with a number of new shows that have started this season. The only show I really want to get my teeth into is Erased, but I would like to start it with my girlfriend so I haven’t taken a look at it yet.

The biggest movie event for me so far was Kung Fu Panda 3. Or rather, the lack of it on South African cinema screens. I get it guys (that’s you SK and NuMetro), KFP3 was probably kak expensive so you’re delaying it for release so that it better overlaps with school holidays, but at least let us know when it’s coming out. Without an actual street date, I might be very tempted to check it out when it inevitably hits the net.

I did see The Hateful Eight the other day, so expect a review on that soon. The TLDR is fans of Tarantino will love it, while people who don’t like his work (particularly the extreme violence and his very ruthless characters) should stay away. I personally enjoyed the shit out of it.

Next up is Deadpool. I haven’t been excited for a movie for a very long time, but every new Deadpool snippet or piece of promotional material gets me even more worked up! I’m probably going to be a bit disappointed, but as long as its a reasonable action comedy, I will consider my money well spent.

Oh yes, and just like everyone else on the planet, I did watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, by the time I decided to write a review pretty much everyone and their dog had written one, so I decided to give it a skip. Was I disappointed? Yes. Enough to dissuade anyone from watching the movie? No. It’s fun, and way better than the prequels, it’s just not great. But why am I even talking about this, you, your family, and your kitten Mittens have probably seen this film at least once by now.

So what more can you expect from Geek Ink this year?

Honestly, I have no idea. I simply don’t have the time that I did when I was a single part-time employed gamer (now I’m a not-so-single part-time employed gamer and post-graduate student). The blog isn’t dead, but I can’t commit to a schedule the way I could a year ago.

All I can say is at the moment, if I haven’t written anything for a while and if you’re ever worried if I’ve disappeared, don’t be. I’m still here.

Unless I’m not here, because I’ve been kidnapped by amazons from outer-space for kinky alien sex. And even if that happens I will be back soon, because my girlfriend won’t be having any of that.
